Exploring our backyard

Students had a great time getting to know our backyard. The temperate rainforests of the Hunua Ranges are an excellent outdoor classroom. We’ve made a great start on field skills – what better place to do this than in the company of huge tree ferns, ancient podocarps, plump kereru (native pigeons) and secretive forest birds such as tomtits (clearly plant and bird ID are part of the skills!). Camping out offered the chance to get up close and personal with some of the nocturnal creatures as well.
